    Tibet: Kangshung Face of Everest

This is a challenging trek to the East Face of Mt. Everest in Tibet. It is a trek in a remote region of Tibet, and would be of special interest to botanists.

This trek takes us to the remote Kharta valley just north of Mt Everest and over the Shao pass to the base camp site below the Kangshung face of Everest. This impressive eastern face of Everest, that drops 3000m from the south col between the peaks of Everest and Lhotse to the Kangshung glacier, is rarely visited by trekking parties.

In addition to the eastern face we also drive to the Rongbuk Monastery and the more frequently visited northern base camp to admire the northern face of this awe inspiring mountain.

The trip starts in kathmandu where we have an opportunity to briefly visit this fascinating city's busy bazaars and mediaeval squares while our documents for Tibet are processed. From Kathmandu we fly to Lhasa over the Himalayas where, cloud permitting, we have superb views of Everest. We stay in Lhasa two days in order to explore such sites as the Potala Palace, Drepung and Sera Monasteries, the Barkhor markets and of course the famous Jokhang Temple. The drive to Everest is via the important monastic centres of Gyantse, Shigatse and Shegar.

Our trek starts in the relatively fertile valley of Kharta from where we walk over Shao La and follow the Kama Chu river to one of its sources at the end of the Kangshung glacier. After trekking to the site of the eastern base camp we return to the Kharta valley via Langma La, 5500m. From Kharta we drive around to the Rongbuk monastery to enjoy the view of the second of the three faces of Everest. Our return to Kathmandu by road is via Tingri, where we get our last look at Everest, and Zhangmu on the Tibet/Nepal border. The trip ends upon arrival back in Kathmandu
