  • My Favorite Treks

I often get asked which is my favourite trek. I find this hard to answer as I always seem to have fun when I am out there! But the selection below gives you an idea as to some of the treks that I would like to recommend. - Mohan

    Chomolhari Trek
It is hard to beat the experience of being in the wilderness, and seeing a part of the Himalaya that is so pristine. The walk is along fast flowing rivers, beautiful forests and superb mountain views with two high mountain crossings. My first trip to Bhutan was over 30years ago - and it is wonderful to see that its natural beauty and culture has remained intact
    Everest View & Guiche-la Treks
I like this trip because it is a wonderful introduction to the Himalaya and it includes a visit to Darjeeling ( a wonderful destination on its own!) You begin with a trek along a relatively moderate grade route that takes you through forests and villages, before you head for Sikkim and trek to the glaciers that surround the world's third highest mountain Kangchenjunga.
    World's Highest Mountain Trek
I often refer to this as the "World's Highest Mountain trek", meaning you trek close to two of the three highest mountains in the world - first to Kangchenjunga in Sikkim and then to the Base Camp of Mt. Everest in Nepal. These two are very different and spectacular treks on their own.
    The Ultimate Everest Trek
I have always enjoyed walking in the Khumbu region of Mt. Everest inspite of the numbers of trekkers there. I do feel that if you are going to trek to the Base Camp of Mt. Everest, it is a wonderful to explore some of this region's other glacial valleys that offer you spectacular mountain views.
    Everest Advance Base Camp
This is possibly the highest walk one can make without any mountaineering. It gets you to 6450m.
On this trip, not only do you get to see and meet the charming Tibetans from remote parts of Tibet who come for a pilgrimage to Lhasa, but also trek on the Rongbuk Glacier on a route used by the earliest mountaineers in the 1920s. The only others on this trail are likely to be mountaineers and support teams. Needless to say you do get spectacular views of Mt. Everest.
Markha Valley & Everest View Trek
I love this trip for the contrast that it offers. The remoteness of Ladakh and (where the roads over the high passes are snow bound for six months a year), and the charming friendly atmosphere of Darjeeling makes this a great trip. The two destinations are nearly 1500km apart. Ladakh is dry and rugged and has monasteries 1000yrs. old, and Darjeeling is lush and green and has views of the world's highest mountains.
    Rajasthan & Everest View Trek
This is really a fun trip, where you visit palaces and forts and travel to the remotest parts of Rajasthan close to the desert. You ofcourse visit the Taj Mahal - an experience few are likely to forget. This region is also well known for precious and semi precious stones as well as carpets. Then in contrast you travel 1500km east to Darjeeling. No pressure salesmen here - just a very friendly relaxed atmosphere, where you can stroll leisurely and enjoy spectacular mountain views or visit charming old shops straight from the days of the Raj. The trek along the Singalila ridge offers you views of Mt. Everest. For those who do not wish to trek, I have often suggested a tour in the region of Sikkim and Kalimpong.
Ha Valley & Everest View Treks
I have included this Bhutan Ha Valley trek, even though I have not been there yet ! I know that it will be amongst my favourites as I have always enjoyed my treks in Bhutan and I am confident that I will enjoy this one too, I like taking the less travelled path and this region has only very recently been opened to the outside world. By travelling to Darjeeling, you also have an opportunity to visit this rather unique town - which is a favourites of most people who have travelled with us, and trek along the Singalila ridge or tour Sikkim and Kalimpong.
    Patagonia Adventure Holiday
This almost takes you back in time as you begin in what to me seemed like a 1970's Madrid - when you walk through the streets of Buenos Aires. And on trek, you stay in simple but comfortable (warm) lodges which are like 3start hotels, and take day walks to the National Parks in Fitz Roy and Paine. The Lake Crossing to Bariloche offers you wonderful mountain views. And for those who love chocolates - Bariloche produces some of the best! It certainly is a great trip, if you like to trek in remote parts with the comfort of warm room to come back to, and enjoy some superb meals and wine.
    Huaraz & Huayhuash Trek
As far as walking holidays go, I find this walk around the Cordillera Huayhuash hard to beat for spectacular landscape. You are walking at the average altitude of 4200m to just under 5000m. Most nights you are camped by beautiful snow fed lakes - and even though the mountains are not high by Himalayan standards - they are beautiful. After your trek you could extend your holiday by visiting Cusco and Machu Picchu and take in the Inca culture.
    Kilimanjaro
I think climbing Kilimanjaro becomes a fun a trip, if you combine this with two nights of game viewing where you are likely to see lions, elephants, rhinos, cheetahs and many other animals. Then trek through spectacular craters filled with colourful flamingos and past Masai villages. I certainly have enjoyed my trips to Africa.
    K2 Base Camp Trek
Getting there is challenging - but I have always had wonderful experiences of treks here. I got on very well with the Balti people. I speak Urdu - which I guess helped! But there is not doubt about it, that if you are adventurous and would like a demanding journey and trek with spectacular mountain views - you will enjoy this trip.
